What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measurement of a person's leanness or corpulence based on their height and weight, and is intended to quantify tissue mass. It is widely used as a general indicator of whether a person has a healthy body weight for their height.
How to Calculate BMI
This BMI calculator uses the standard formula provided by the World Health Organization (WHO):
- Metric Units: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²)
- Imperial Units: BMI = 703 × weight (lbs) ÷ height² (in²)
| BMI Category | BMI Range (kg/m²) |
|---|---|
| Underweight | < 18.5 |
| Normal Weight | 18.5 – 24.9 |
| Overweight | 25 – 29.9 |
| Obese | > 30 |
Is BMI Accurate for Everyone?
While BMI is a useful health screening tool, it has limitations. It does not directly measure body fat. Therefore, it may overestimate fat in athletes or individuals with high muscle mass, and underestimate fat in older persons or those with sarcopenia.
Health Risks of High BMI
Maintaining a high BMI (Overweight or Obese) is linked to several health conditions, including Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, and Cardiovascular Disease. Always consult with a healthcare provider for a comprehensive health assessment.
